Lycopene for Bone Health and More! Antioxidants and phytonutrients from plants may protect more than the immune system, eyes, and cardiovascular system. This highly beneficial class of micro-nutrients may even promote bone health. This according to a new study funded by the USDA’s Agricultural Research Service. An increased intake of carotenoids, and particularly lycopene, was associated with promoting bone health and protection of bone mineral density. The results of the study were published in this month’s American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. Researchers from Tufts University, Hebrew SeniorLife, and Boston University conducted the study. “These results suggest a possible protective effect of carotenoids, particulary of lycopene, against bone loss in older adults,” wrote the researchers.
